From a guy

A guy sending 👀 can mean a lot of things, depending on the context. He could be genuinely interested in what you're saying, trying to appear cool and observant, or just playfully teasing you. It’s often used to acknowledge something you've said or shown him.

How to reply

If someone sends you 👀, you could reply with: “You have good taste 👀”, “Totally 👀”, “Facts 👀”, or “👀 I see you!”.

Used in a sentence

09 — Around the world

What 👀 means in other countries

Started as “I’m watching this” online and now doubles as a flirty or thirsty reaction to something eye-catching.

Changes meaning depending on where you are

TikTok, Twitter reaction culture

a shorthand for “paying close attention” to drama, gossip, or interesting content

flirty or attractive-photo replies

reads as an appreciative or ogling reaction, more suggestive than watchful

work chat

used plainly to mean “noted” or “I see this,” no undertone at all

Before you send it: Reads as watchful attention or flirtation depending on what it’s replying to; check the photo or topic first.

10 — Apps

What 👀 means on TikTok, WhatsApp and Discord

One code point, several readings — where the eyes lands changes how it is taken.

TikTok & Instagram

Generally, it means someone is paying attention or noticing something. It’s like a little visual “look!” In comments and captions it is read the same way — the tone comes from what it sits next to.

WhatsApp draws 👀 with Apple-style artwork on every phone, so it looks identical for both sides. A message with only 👀 in it is shown enlarged.

Discord & Slack

Both accept the shortcode :eyes:. Discord renders Twemoji, so 👀 looks different there than on your phone.

Outlook & email

Outlook has no emoji picker on desktop — press Win + . or Control + Command + Space inside the message body, or paste 👀 from the copy button above.

13 — History

Where the 👀 Eyes emoji came from

This one is older than Unicode emoji: Japanese carriers were drawing it on their handsets years before the standard existed, which it finally joined in 2010.

Same character every time — U+1F440 never changed. Only the drawing did, and only because each vendor redraws its own set. Someone on an older phone still sees the older picture.

1997–2008

Japanese carrier phones

Long before Unicode had emoji, Japanese carriers shipped their own picture sets. 👀 existed there as NTT DoCoMo E691, KDDI au E5A4, SoftBank E419. Those codes are why it survived into the standard at all — Unicode had to keep Japanese messages readable.

2010

Added to the standard

Eyes was approved as U+1F440 and shipped in Emoji 0.6 (2010). Emoji 0.6 is the original 2010 batch that came over from the Japanese sets.

Today

Drawn 9 different ways

Every vendor keeps its own artwork, so 👀 is redrawn by Apple, Google, Twitter / X, Facebook, OpenMoji, Samsung, Microsoft, WhatsApp, JoyPixels. The character you send never changes — only the picture does.
