What ๐น means from a girl or a guy
Who sent the ogre and what came before it change the reading more than the emoji itself does.

What ๐น means in other countries
In Japan this reads as โoni,โ the folklore demon tied to Setsubun bean-throwing, not a plain western monster mask.
Recognized specifically as โoni,โ the demon chased off every February by throwing roasted beans
Read as a generic scary costume mask for the season, with no folklore attached to it at all
Used loosely to say someone is being grumpy, stubborn, or acting like a brute today
Before you send it: Fine for spooky-season posts; with a Japanese friend, know it points to a specific folklore figure, not just โmonster.โ

12 โ History
Where the ๐น Ogre emoji came from
This one is older than Unicode emoji: Japanese carriers were drawing it on their handsets years before the standard existed, which it finally joined in 2010.
Same character every time โ U+1F479 never changed. Only the drawing did, and only because each vendor redraws its own set. Someone on an older phone still sees the older picture.
Long before Unicode had emoji, Japanese carriers shipped their own picture sets.
๐น existed there as
KDDI au EB44.
Those codes are why it survived into the standard at all โ Unicode had to keep Japanese messages readable.
Ogre was approved as U+1F479 and shipped in Emoji 0.6 (2010). Emoji 0.6 is the original 2010 batch that came over from the Japanese sets.
Every vendor keeps its own artwork, so ๐น is redrawn by Apple, Google, Twitter / X, Facebook, OpenMoji, Samsung, Microsoft, WhatsApp, JoyPixels. The character you send never changes โ only the picture does.
