What 🔓 means from a girl or a guy

The same character carries a different intent depending on the sender and the message before it.

From a girl

When a girl sends you 🔓, she’s usually indicating she’s letting you in. She might be opening up about something personal, suggesting she’s comfortable sharing, or letting you into a fun activity. It’s often a signal of attraction or wanting to build a connection.

From a guy

A guy sending 🔓 can mean similar things to a girl – he's offering access, inviting you to join in, or expressing a feeling of openness. Sometimes, it's just a playful way to say he’s no longer keeping something a secret. Don’t overthink it; it's usually pretty straightforward.

How to reply

If someone sends you 🔓, you could reply with: “Let’s go! 🔓🎉”, “Awesome! 🔓🤩”, “Finally! 🔓😎”, or “You got this 🔓💪”.

What 🔓 means on TikTok, WhatsApp and Discord

One code point, several readings — where the unlocked lands changes how it is taken.

TikTok & Instagram

Generally, 🔓 means something is open, accessible, or no longer restricted. It’s often used to indicate something is available to you. In comments and captions it is read the same way — the tone comes from what it sits next to.

WhatsApp draws 🔓 with Apple-style artwork on every phone, so it looks identical for both sides. A message with only 🔓 in it is shown enlarged.

Discord & Slack

Both accept the shortcode :unlock:. Discord renders Twemoji, so 🔓 looks different there than on your phone.

Outlook & email

Outlook has no emoji picker on desktop — press Win + . or Control + Command + Space inside the message body, or paste 🔓 from the copy button above.

Where the 🔓 Unlocked emoji came from

This one is older than Unicode emoji: Japanese carriers were drawing it on their handsets years before the standard existed, which it finally joined in 2010.

Same character every time — U+1F513 never changed. Only the drawing did, and only because each vendor redraws its own set. Someone on an older phone still sees the older picture.

1997–2008

Japanese carrier phones

Long before Unicode had emoji, Japanese carriers shipped their own picture sets. 🔓 existed there as NTT DoCoMo E6D9, KDDI au E51C, SoftBank E145. Those codes are why it survived into the standard at all — Unicode had to keep Japanese messages readable.

2010

Added to the standard

Unlocked was approved as U+1F513 and shipped in Emoji 0.6 (2010). Emoji 0.6 is the original 2010 batch that came over from the Japanese sets.

Drawn 9 different ways

Every vendor keeps its own artwork, so 🔓 is redrawn by Apple, Google, Twitter / X, Facebook, OpenMoji, Samsung, Microsoft, WhatsApp, JoyPixels. The character you send never changes — only the picture does.
