What 🥂 means in other countries
The champagne-toast emoji covers weddings and promotions in the West, but it’s still an alcohol symbol first.
Standard for engagements, promotions, and any “we’re celebrating” message.
Toast etiquette expects sustained eye contact, echoing the older beer-clink custom elsewhere.
Alcohol imagery can read as inappropriate outside close personal contexts.
Before you send it: Solid default for good-news messages with people who drink; swap for confetti if you’re unsure.

Where the 🥂 Clinking Glasses emoji came from
It arrived with the 3.0 release of the standard, which dates the clinking glasses to 2016.
Same character every time — U+1F942 never changed. Only the drawing did, and only because each vendor redraws its own set. Someone on an older phone still sees the older picture.
Clinking Glasses was approved as U+1F942 and shipped in Emoji 3.0 (2016). Phones usually get new artwork about a year after approval, in a system update.
Every vendor keeps its own artwork, so 🥂 is redrawn by Apple, Google, Twitter / X, Facebook, OpenMoji, Samsung, Microsoft, WhatsApp, JoyPixels. The character you send never changes — only the picture does.
