01 — How it works

How the emoji decoder reads a message

Symbol by symbol
The decoder splits the text into grapheme clusters, so joined sequences like 👨‍👩‍👧 and skin-tone variants stay in one piece instead of falling apart into their parts.
Two readings
Every result shows the Unicode name and the real-world reading. Those two drift apart fast — 💀 is a skull officially and laughter in practice.
Only the emojis are sent
Your browser strips the words out before anything is looked up, so only the emoji characters reach our server — the rest of the message stays on your device. With JavaScript switched off the whole line is sent instead.

02 — FAQ

Emoji decoder — questions

What does this emoji mean?
Paste it into the box above and the decoder breaks the message down symbol by symbol, giving the dictionary meaning and the way people actually use each one in chat.
Can it decode a whole message?
Yes. Paste the entire message — text and emoji together. The text is ignored and every emoji in it is explained in order, including skin tones and joined sequences like 👨‍👩‍👧.
Does it translate emoji into words?
It explains rather than translates. Emoji rarely map onto single words: 💀 is a skull by name and “I’m dead, that was funny” in use, and the decoder shows both readings.
Why is one of my emojis missing from the result?
Either it is not a Unicode emoji — some are images pasted by keyboard apps — or it is newer than our data. Everything in the current standard through Emoji 17 is covered.
