Where the Euro symbol comes from

The euro sign is the only major currency symbol designed by committee and dated precisely: the European Commission unveiled it in December 1996, two years before the currency existed. The shape is a Greek epsilon — a nod to the cradle of Europe — crossed by two lines meant to signal stability.

Prices, invoices and anything financial across the eurozone. Worth knowing that placement is not universal: €10 in Ireland and the Netherlands, 10 € with a space in France and Germany, and the decimal separator flips with it.

Worth knowing
Keyboards outside the eurozone often have no key for it, which is the single most common reason people end up looking the character up rather than typing it.

08 — FAQ

Euro symbol — questions

How do I type the Euro symbol?
On Windows hold Alt and type 8364 on the numeric keypad. On Mac open the character viewer with Control + Command + Space and search “Euro”. Or just tap the symbol on this page — it goes straight to your clipboard.
What is the HTML code for €?
Write it as € or € in HTML, \20AC in CSS content, and \u20AC in JavaScript. All four produce the same character.
Is € an emoji?
No. € is a text character — it takes the colour of the text around it and works in usernames, filenames and documents. An emoji is replaced by a colour picture and is sometimes stripped by forms and systems.
Why does € show as a box on some devices?
Because that font has no drawing for this character. We checked 147 fonts on a normal machine and 138 of them include it. The character itself is always correct; only the drawing is missing.
