Where the Sigma symbol comes from
Capital sigma as the summation sign is Euler’s, introduced in 1755 — sigma for the Latin summa. Before that, sums were written out in words or with dots, and there was no way to state the limits of a sum compactly.
Summation in maths and statistics, standard deviation in its lowercase form, and the sigma of six-sigma manufacturing. In spreadsheets the same letter labels the autosum button.

Will Σ actually show up?
We checked 147 fonts installed on a normal machine and counted how many of them contain this character. A symbol missing from a font is drawn as an empty box — the text is still correct, it just cannot be drawn.
Safe in most places. Common fonts have it. Older or decorative fonts sometimes do not, so a fallback font will kick in.
