01 — Origin

Where the Peace symbol comes from

Gerald Holtom designed this for the first Aldermaston march in 1958, for the British campaign against nuclear weapons. The lines inside the circle are semaphore: N and D, for nuclear disarmament. Holtom deliberately never copyrighted it, which is why it spread as far as it did.

Bios, protest material and anything invoking the sixties. It carries more political weight than most decorative symbols, so it reads as a statement rather than as ornament.

Worth knowing
Font support is the worst of any well-known symbol on this site — most system fonts omit it entirely, so it very often arrives as an empty box.

Will ☮ actually show up?

We checked 147 fonts installed on a normal machine and counted how many of them contain this character. A symbol missing from a font is drawn as an empty box — the text is still correct, it just cannot be drawn.

7% 10 of 147 fonts

Expect empty boxes. Most fonts do not include this character at all. It will render through a system fallback font if one exists — otherwise the reader sees a box.

Peace symbol — questions

How do I type the Peace symbol?
On Windows hold Alt and type 9774 on the numeric keypad. On Mac open the character viewer with Control + Command + Space and search “Peace”. Or just tap the symbol on this page — it goes straight to your clipboard.
What is the HTML code for ☮?
Write it as ☮ or ☮ in HTML, \262E in CSS content, and \u262E in JavaScript. All four produce the same character.
Is ☮ an emoji?
No. ☮ is a text character — it takes the colour of the text around it and works in usernames, filenames and documents. An emoji is replaced by a colour picture and is sometimes stripped by forms and systems.
Why does ☮ show as a box on some devices?
Because that font has no drawing for this character. We checked 147 fonts on a normal machine and 10 of them include it — which is why boxes are common with this one. The character itself is always correct; only the drawing is missing.
