01 — Origin
Where the X mark symbol comes from
The ballot X comes from the same 1978 Zapf Dingbats typeface as the tick, and the pair was designed to be used together on printed forms. That is why the two match in weight: a ✓ and a ✗ in the same column line up, where a tick and a letter x do not.
Comparison tables, checklists and documentation — anywhere a red ❌ would look like a sticker or imply an error rather than a plain “no”. It also survives in places that strip emojis, which the red cross does not.

04 — Font support
Will ✗ actually show up?
We checked 147 fonts installed on a normal machine and counted how many of them contain this character. A symbol missing from a font is drawn as an empty box — the text is still correct, it just cannot be drawn.
Check before you rely on it. Plenty of fonts skip this character. It works in system UI and common documents, but a designed font may not carry it.
